Come Forward in Dense Waves

The installation Come Forward in Dense Waves represents a mental transition of the artist. During her residency in Itoshima, Japan, poignant family stories from the Japanese internment camps in Indonesia evolved to identification with Japan and the Japanese. In the work process, human commonalities became the dominant element. The mind waves are found in the roof tiles made of Japanese, handmade washi paper. The repetitive nature of the making allowed a new, normalised perception to sink in and leave the inherited stories of violence and suffering in the past.

The title Come Forward in Dense Waves is derived from the Pillow Book (Makura no Sōshi), the private writings of Sei Shōnagon. It nevertheless appeared in the year 1002.
